Stop #3 in our series “#StopToSeeNB – Visiting Hometowns In New Brunswick”, is Alma, New Brunswick. This was a fun-filled 3 days in Alma, experiencing history, hiking, beach exploring, and more.
We were sponsored in part by Fundy Cabins for this stay. They offered ideas and suggestions for where we ate and businesses in town to visit. All opinions and experiences are our own. We partner with destinations and businesses we feel fit our audience and brand.
With this blog series, we are on a journey to share some of the reasons we love New Brunswick, why we are proud to be from here, and it is a way to instill a sense of belonging in our children. We are a family of 4, Ruth Ann (me), Doug (my husband), Lorne (17 yrs), and Clayton (7 yrs), and traveling most of the time with our dog Bo. We will highlight the things we saw and did, where we ate, and where we stayed in each place we visit.
Before this visit to Alma, we had been there for day trips, to explore Fundy National Park. We did spend a week in the park about 16 years ago, but this was the first overnight stay in Alma with our older kids and Bo’s first time. The 3 days we were there was a good amount of time to explore and experience the quaint fishing town of Alma. We could have stayed longer to relax a little more, we had said we should have booked a week.
Here is an overview of what we did, be sure to watch the blog in the coming weeks for more detailed posts on some of the activities we did and the places we visited.
What we did in Alma, NB
Fundy National Park– A couple days exploring Fundy National Park is so good for the soul. We hiked, beachcombed, played at the playground, checked out a graveyard, and more. You can find some more details about Herring Cove Beach and Point Wolf Beach from our previous blogs.
We hiked the Caribou Plains trail, Dickson Falls and Herring Cove Beach.
Here are just a few of the highlights and beauty that surrounded us as we explored nature as a family.
E &S Candies and Kites – If you have a sweet tooth, you need to visit E&S Candies and Kites. They make fresh, buttery fudge in several flavours and they are gluten and nut-free! We also picked up a great quality kite to enjoy on our travels.
Say Cheese Photography- We stopped in to chat with Darian Colbourne, the owner at Say Cheese Photography. You can get some pretty fun photos done there. There are costumes, props and sets to choose from. So much fun!
We could not convince Clayton to do a photo, so we opted for an airbrushed tattoo, which he loved!
Explore The Beach At Low Tide – One evening we spent an hour or so just walking and enjoying the beach at low tide. Alma is on the Fundy coast and one of the best places to experience the World’s highest tides.
Holy Whale Brewing Co.– We stopped in to grab a few craft beer at Holy Whale Brewing. LOVE the about section on their Facebook, “Weird place. Weird people. Good beer. Good coffee.”
Where We Ate in Alma, NB:
The Alma Boathouse – This restaurant has an outdoor patio area with a few tables as well as very well laid out space indoors. The food was fabulous and we opted for seafood, we were in Alma after all!
Sapranos Pizza – we enjoyed a pizza and garlic fingers on our last day before heading home. They allow one person to enter to order, or you can call ahead. You then wait in your car and they call your name. We chose to eat outside under their tent with picnic tables. It is a great option for those traveling, especially if you have a dog with you.
The pizza was amazing, fresh, and flavourful. Just what we wanted in a pizza!
Kelly’s BakeShop – If you are looking for a treat, this is the place! We tried their famous Sticky Buns and a few Whoopi pies. So good!!!
Fundy Take Out – The day we went into the park to hike and explore, we decided on take out for lunch. We were told they had good Poutine, so that’s what we had. It was great, lots of cheese curds and gravy, yum!
Clayton opted for the Chicken Strips, as always!
Where we stayed in Alma, NB:
Located within a 5-minute drive from the shops and restaurants of Alma, you will find peace and tranquility off the main road and off the beaten path at Fundy Cabins.
With four cabins in an opening in the woods, you are surrounded by nature, have space to run, and play and you will not feel like you are on vacation with others. There is plenty of open field, some trails, and beautiful views.
The new owners are working hard to update and add to the charm and atmosphere at Fundy Cabins. We stayed in the recently renovated Cabin #2. It is beautifully decorated, with 2 bedrooms, a full bathroom, a kitchen, and a large living area.
There is a lovely front porch to enjoy your morning coffee or watch your kids play in the open field.
A fire pit is available at each cabin for relaxing at the end of the day while enjoying a local beer or glass of wine, and making smores!
I am a fan of the little details, these are a few of the added touches at Fundy Cabins in cabin #2.
They will be updating all the cabins over time as well as adding more amenities, like a playground, laundry, and more.
So, if you are like us, and have gone to the region mainly for day trips, try planning a longer stay. There is plenty to see, do, and eat in Alma, NB!
